Many of you must know of the skullpelt, a frankly terrifying creature which Twig encounters in Beyond the Deepwoods. As far as I know, the skullpelt has only ever appeared in Beyond the Deepwoods and was never mentioned and never appeared again. In addition to being one of the only beings to frequent Lullabee groves (I.e. the caterbird, oakelves) it created a dreamlike atmosphere when it hunted its prey, also employ a strategy where it could look like presumably anyone/anything, although it only ever appeared as Spelda, Twig’s mother and its true form. What do we think?
Is the skullpelt a demon like the Gloamglozer, able to change shape, or is it simply creating illusions rather than truly changing its shape?
Is it a sentient being (i.e. goblins, trolls, trogs, waifs, elves) a sentient being incapable of common speech (I.e. banderbears) a non-bipedal sentient being (I.e. spindlebugs) a mystical sentient being (I.e. caterbirds) a forest wanderer, a trickster, a murderer, a monster, a demon or an ancient spirit akin to blisters and gloamglozers and sundry? Is it part of the group of group of demons that once wandered the edge before the Mother Storm seeded it with life, of which the Gloamglozers are the sole survivors? Or is it simply a spirit who preys on travelers?
I still love these books, even after discovering them twenty-five years ago. Now I’m a seventy-year-old grandma. I still can’t pass up a debated about gyle goblins or termagant trogs, though.
Fav character??
I read the books in chronological order, which revealed a significant change in maturity / logical consistency between the Quint and Twig Sagas. For a new read-through I would recommend sticking to the original order of releases (with the exception reading a lost bark scroll where it fits chronologically), as it more closely matches the development of the overarching themes in the Edge Chronicles.
Honorable Mentions:
If I had to add The Sky Chart, it would be D-Tier. If I had to split up the Lost Bark Scrolls, I would rate both Cloud Wolf and The Stone Pilot D-Tier. However, the The Slaughterer's Quest and The Blooding of Rufus Filatine would be on A-Tier, but since they make the larger part of the Lost Bark Scrolls, I kept it on A-Tier.
Did you love it, did you hate it, what would you rate it?
Okay so was just looking through articles and came across the age old question, are ratbirds, and by extension Snickets, birds or mammals?? or both??? Because the articles states that Ratbirds are "Rodent-like birds" But the tags file them under Rodents, and mammals but not birds?
Since the rollout of UCP, some wiki pages are displaying entirely in italic font. It seems that the issue is that in some infoboxes, there's an open <i> tag, but no closing tag (which worked just fine before the update).
Like here in the infobox for Dengreeve:
{{Character_infobox|...|appearance = <i>[[The Winter Knights]]|...}}
Some ways to deal with this:
1. Close the tag by adding a </i>
2. Use wiki syntax instead
''[[Freeglader]]''
3. Use book ref templates, which does the formatting for you
{{Book ref|book name}}
4. Use book templates instead, for example for The Winter Knights:
{{TWK}}
More on templates here:
If there are more efficient methods, feel free to share them.
Thanks for contributing to the wiki!
SPOILER!!!
Like in our world it is a celestial body that our planet orbits around. But like at the end of the last book we find out that there is no planet in the edgeworld, just the edge cliff, floating in open sky. If you are standing on the brink and watch the sun rise or set can you see it below the cliff? Does it orbits the edge or the other way round, similar question with regards to the moon? And the stars. Like what are they all in the context of this universe.
I'm not necessarily looking for canon answers as I don't think there are any. But some ideas and a discussion could be fun. See if we can figure this out ourselves.
My first thought was maybe the edge exist inside a gas giant planet. Or maybe it is a spotlight sun like flatearthers are so fond of.
