Chert was the chief of the Shadow Clan of Hammerhead Goblins who lived in the Western Woods close to the Farrow Ridges. He was the father of Teeg. [1]

The Nameless One[]
Cade and Celestia rescued Chert's son Teeg from a bloodoak, when he was scouting ahead for the tribe. Chert invited them to watch Teeg "gain his mark", a tattoo depicting his rescue, and then to eat with the tribe.[1] He ordered his tribe to leave when Celestia and Cade were still sleeping, leaving them only a ring that would mark them as honorary clan members.[2]
Doombringer[]
Chert and the Shadow Clan fought in the Battle of the Farrow Ridges on the side of the Farrow Ridges. When Baahl was escorted by the Mire-pearlers from Blatch Helmstoft's cabin with the other strategists and leaders of the effort, Chert decided set Baahl's plan into motion and use the "old ways" in battle[3]. Covered in mud, drawing tilder blood behind them, the warriors advanced onto the Levels. Cascades of logworms following the hammerheads devoured the mire-pearlers, bringing a diversion for Cade to sabotage the phrax mines and deciding the battle.[4]
