Featherfule was a waif, possibly a nightwaif[1], who lived in the city of Riverrise during the Third Age of Flight. At some point during his life, he left the city to travel, to later return.[2]

Featherfule, along with five other characters, was created for a 2014 competition for the Guardian children's books site. The drawings of the characters were given to the winner of the contest, along with a copy of The Nameless One.[2] The other characters created for the competition were:
