Flabsweat was the owner of a small, but prosperous pet shop in Undertown. It often sold sentient creatures which could not really be considered pets, but were instead essentially slaves.

History[]

Before the Great Storm of 35 ᴇ.ʏ.[]

The shop was hit by a broken emergency chain at least once before the events of Stormchaser.[1]

Sometime in 35 ᴇ.ʏ., the caterbird was captured and sold to Flabsweat, who kept it in a tiny cage outside his shop. Twig Verginix discovered this and agreed to free the bird, as long as it told him the story of why the emergency chains were built.

A few minutes after this, a vulpoon broke free of its tether and almost killed a lapmuffler. Flabsweat ran off to fetch the animal-doctor, leaving the shop in the hands of Twig, believing him to be trustworthy. Twig freed the caterbird, and only just managed to escape Flabsweat as he returned with the vet.[2]

After the Great Storm[]

Flabsweat received a consignment of creatures from the Deepwoods, and agreed to give Twig some free exotic pets in return for a gauntlet coated in phraxdust. Twig chose to free Spooler, Goom and Woodfish to serve in his crew.[3]

Description[]

The shop was located in either the southern or central areas of Undertown[4]. It was on a busy street opposite an ironmongers, near several stalls[1]. Large animals were kept outside the shop, such as the Caterbird, which was kept in a cage, and a prowlgrin pup, which was kept tethered in a straw-covered area. Inside were shackles for keeping slaves and pets in place.

Legal loophole[]

The most famous law in Undertown, written in its constitution, was that it was illegal to enslave an Undertowner[5][6]. The punishment for this was death. However, this law specifically applies to citizens of Undertown only, leading to a loophole of legally importing slaves from the Deepwoods. This loophole was exploited by Flabsweat and his suppliers, who sold pretty much any creature, regardless of it being sentient or not.
