Mire-clams were parasitic bivalves found in the Mire. They also sometimes formed on sky wrecks, warming the flight-rock and ensuring that the skip remained in the air. They regularly opened their shells and breathed out warm, moist air. [1]

The mire-pearls of the Mire-Clams were expensive and often decorated the purses of rich people in the Third Age of Flight. Mire Pearlers like Merton Hoist harvested and sold them.

Behind the scenes[]

In a facebook post, Paul Stewart explained the inspiration for and sky wrecks and revealed a page from the Black Books:

Skywreck behindthescenes2

"On the most ancient wrecks, can be found perhaps the strangest of inhabitants of skywrecks - the giant mire clam. Seeded by airborne creatures' feet, the mire clam can grow to huge size on a suitable wreck and is a powerful lure to skypirates as a mature clam can yield a fortune in high quality mire pearls. The danger of harvesting them, though, deters all but the most courageous and desperate."[2]
